Plastic Machining guidelines

Stock List

Tools must be kept sharp and smooth at all times.

Feed rates should be as high as possible.

Good swarf removal from the tool must be maintained.

Apply coolant for operations where lots of heat is generated e.g. Drilling.

As plastics are not as rigid as metals good support is essential during machining.

Use light clamping forces.

High Speed Steel tooling works well with most plastics, although some of the exotic varieties may require more selective tooling.

Avoid sharp internal corners, 1mm minimum radius.
